Methane capture & reuse
Useful resources

Destruction of methane generated from dairy manure in covered anaerobic ponds, Clean Energy Regulator

Methodology to claim earn Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs) for emissions reductions that can be sold to generate income to the government tor in the secondary market, legislation, tools & resources

e.g. installation and operation of pond covers, gas capture equipment and combustion equipment to existing uncovered effluent treatments, or the replacement of conventional ponds with covered ponds systems. Biogas is collected from the covered ponds and the methane component of the biogas is combusted using flares, an electricity generation system, and/or a gas boiler.

Destruction of methane generated from manure in piggeries, Clean Energy Regulator

Methodology to claim earn Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs) for emissions reductions that can be sold to generate income to the government tor in the secondary market, legislation, tools & resources

e.g. installation of new covered lagoons or the covering of existing uncovered treatment lagoons, and installing and operating gas capture and combustion equipment. Biogas is collected from the covered lagoons and the methane component of the biogas is combusted using flares, an electricity generation system, and/or a gas boiler.

Pork GHG Mitigation, The National Agricultural Manure Management Program, Australian Pork

Anaerobic Treatment for Emissions Reduction from Solid Manure Residues, The National Agricultural Manure Management Program, Australian Pork

Destruction of methane from piggeries using engineered biodigesters, Clean Energy Regulator

Methodology to claim earn Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs) for emissions reductions that can be sold to generate income to the government tor in the secondary market, legislation, tools & resources

e.g. installation and operation of engineered biodigesters, plus gas capture and combustion equipment, instead of a conventional manure/waste treatment lagoon. The biogas is combusted by a flaring system, boiler or internal combustion engine (that can also be connected to an electricity generator).

Feasibility of Using Feedlot Manure for Biogas Production, 2015, Peter Watts and Bernadette McCabe, Meat and Livestock Association

A comprehensive review on the application of anaerobic digestion technologies treating agricultural waste for energy recovery including the identification of technically-feasible technologies for beef feedlot manure. An understanding of feedlot feedstock and current manure handling practices at feedlots throughout Australia. A technical and economic assessment of the different anaerobic treatment systems. The results of biomethane potential (BMP) using different aged manures at lab scale. Development of a pre-treatment system(s) to produce optimal influent material from feedlot manure as managed in existing systems. Recommendations for systems worth trialling in a future farm-scale pilot trial. A preliminary economic assessment of the system at a 10,000 head feedlot.

Case studies

Poultry manure to power in the Darling Downs, 2014, Biomass Producer

Darling Downs Fresh Eggs is the first Australian egg producer, and one of only a few in the world, to power its business using renewable energy generated from poultry manure.

The company expects to reduce its grid electricity usage by 60% in the first year, saving around $250,000.

Power from pig poo, 2014, Agr Innovators

Australia's first completed commercial methane digestion system

Berrybank Farm Energy Recovery project, Windermere, Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning

Berrybank Farm collect methane from the piggery waste to generate electricity for the farm and feed any excess into the electricity grid. They also produce potting mix and fertiliser from piggery waste.

Chandala Poultry – Power from poultry waste

Chandala Poultry from Gingin, Western Australia is designing a system that will recover the energy from the chicken litter (manure and bedding) that the farm produces and use it to meet the farms onsite requirements (Biochar)

Bears Lagoon piggery, Dairy Australia

The waste from 23,000 pigs  is treated in covered anaerobic ponds. Treated effluent is used for irrigation  while methane created is used to generate electricity and/or heating.
