Cook Shire Council have achieved ecoBiz partner status for The Cooktown Public Pool and the Council Administration building indicating a reduction in energy and water useage over a 12 month period. Initiatives include an upgrade to LED lighting as well as an air conditioning upgrade - both with improved energy efficiency. The Cooktown Pool is soon to include solar heating which will increase patronage over the winter months. The Council has also joined the Reef Guardian initiative and discontinued the use of single-use plastic products, all plastic bags and balloons at all facilities, properties and Council run events as of July 2019.
