The risk posed by the potential failure of a dam is often poorly understood and hundreds, if not thousands of dams around the world with low safety ratings continue to operate.
Two dams from different parts of the world made headlines within 2 weeks of each other due to the damaging and devastating effects of flooding. The stories behind the Ross River Dam in Townsville and Brumadinho tailings dam in Brazil are significantly different but, as with all dams, they share the responsibilities for flood risk management and the protection of lives and property.
